Subject: pebsioner winter fuel payments

Sir,

On 22nd November the House of Commons debated an opposition motion which requested a review of the reduction of £50 off the over 60's and £100 off the over 80's winter fuel payments. The motion was lost with Conservatives and Lib-Dems voting against.
Locally our own Norman Lamb M.P. voted, in effect, in favour of extracting £100 from the over 80's winter fuel payment ,one of the most vulnerable groups in the U.K.
Surely this is a case of abandoning ones principles in favour of self-advancement.

Sir,

Peter North asks "What's the point of the Liberal Democrats?" EDP Friday 2nd December.
I often ask myself the very same question since despite pre-election protestations they have thrown their lot in with the Conservatives.
However the bigger question must be, what is the point of the three larger parties fighting elections separately when they are all constrained in what they can achieve by all supporting continued membership of the European Union.
Only the United Kingdom Independence Party(UK I P) has the ability to offer any significant difference to the electors as their primary policy is to withdraw from political union with Europe.
Remember the old saying, "if you always do what you have always done nothing will change"

Sir,

At the recent meeting of the Holt Town Council we received our monthly report from the Police Liason Officer.
I was amazed to hear that in spite of the ever increasing rates precept claimed by the police that their presence in Holt was to be reduced.
Holt used to be covered by an Inspector, the town was then downgraded to a Sergeant then down to a PC beat manager. Currently we enjoy 2 PC's, 1 part time PC and 3 PCSO's. Now we are to have 1 PC and 3 PCSO's.
Where are all the other resources being deployed, why is Holt being side-lined yet again?

Sir,

On BBC Radio Norfolk this morning was a report regarding the theft from Fakenham church of money from charity collections at the Christmas tree festival.
Indeed every day we hear of some theft, metal plaques from graveyards, cast iron manhole covers or even lengths of overhead cables from the railways.
Is it not time that a new offence of 'society theft' was introduced involving draconian penalties.
I am not downgrading theft from individuals merely upgrading the seriousness of theft from the general community.

Sir,

So the Conservative administration is flexing its muscles at the North Norfolk District Council. Why stop at firing and re-hiring to save just £200,000?.
Why not take a closer look around Norfolk. North Norfolk seems to be alone in needing a Chief Executive, a Deputy Chief Executive and three further directors which I understand amounts to an overhead in excess of £500,000.
There are only 325 staff. I run 250 staff and a business that has to compete in a recessionary market place and make a profit and for that I need just one other part time executive director. But then I have a dedicated workforce upon whom I can rely to do a great job.
May I suggest to the Conservative administration that they approach the job of giving the ratepayer value for money with a little more gusto.

Subject: N & N Hospital
 Sir,
"How PFI deal paved way for new hospital" EDP Sept. 16th.

In the whole article stretching over 2 pages there was not one mention of the European Union. It is because of the European Union that the hospital had to be built under a PFI contract. European Union rules dictate that Government debt cannot exceed 3% of GDP.
The only way under for the project to commence was by PFI, a device invented to keep capital expenditure off the Government's balance sheet but an extremely expensive way of financing the hospital. We read in the article of all local MP's from ALL parties bemoaning the use of PFI but none of them were honest enough to tell the electorate why it was used. As a result with many years of heavy financing still ahead of us we have paid to Octagon Healthcare more than twice the original capital cost of the hospital. As an aside it is felt that the deal has some merits, namely that the hospital will be well maintained during the duration of the contract. The question asked in the article "is there another way of producing the same outcome more cheaply?" How about a competently handled Government contract!

Subject: wind turbines

Sir,
Dr. Taylor refers to the need to generate jobs, to support innovation and encourage a spirit of entrepreneurism. I could not agree more.
As a near neighbour I have no 'Nimby' problem with this turbine.
However what so many people do not talk about are the facts.
1. The economics - the only thing that makes these projects viable are subsidies, these are generated by the Government at the behest of the European Union. They(we) will be heavily fined if they do not produce 20% of our energy sustainably by 2020. In doing so they will of course push up the price of our energy.
2. Carbon audit - this is where the green lobby comes unstuck. A full green audit must take into account every aspect of the project from the production of the materials of construction to transport and even the living conditions of the workers. Do not forget the excavation and many cubic metres of reinforced concrete necessary to stop this turbine from falling over. Cement production involves a massive use of energy. Every megawatt of rated power needs to be supported by a megawatt of conventionally produced power.
3. Engineering considerations - a megawatt rated turbine produces a megawatt
under ideal conditions, as wind speed falls output falls faster. No wind no power, high wind no power.
At the end of the day the decision will be made at the council on planning reasons not emotive reasons.
I shall reserve my decision until I have heard the planning arguments at committee.

Subject: This wasteful handout....
Sir,
Seldom do I agree with the Green Party, but I must say that Rupert Read's comments regarding Eric Pickles and his £0.25 billion hand out for more frequent bin collections in the current economic situation are spot on and Eric Pickles' plans defy belief.
The use of this money to help set up reuse and repair centres is eminently sensible. The waste that is created by our throw away society is little more than criminal when so much of it could be repaired and reused. The knock on effects are the creation of jobs by entrepreneurial electricians, carpenters and other trades and the access that less well off members of the population would have to consumer goods.

Yours faithfully,

UK I P District Councillor Michael Baker,
Sir,

Mike Jozfiak, EDP 19th, says "we need more apprentices". It is UK I P policy that we should scrap this ridiculous target of 50% of school leavers going to university. It is a project we cannot afford and one which those who should be at university cannot afford either. Vocational skills should be learnt in the workplace with backup in the classroom, i.e. apprenticeships. This course of action is less costly and does not leave the student with huge debts. It also allows our Government to plough money into apprenticeships which will mop up those not going to university and still have funds to include many more currently living off the state with no hope of future work.
UK I P is much more than a single 'withdraw from Europe' policy party.

Yours faithfully,

UK I P Cllr. Michael Baker,
Church Farm, West Beckham.
Sir,
The issue of locally elected police chiefs has long been on the manifesto of the UK Independence Party, UK I P.
Tony Callaghan, taxpayer's alliance, got it right in his letter to you yesterday, EDP 19th. The current situation is not working.

Yours faithfully,

UK I P Cllr. Michael Baker,
Church Farm, West Beckham.
Sir,

The police blame the politicians, the politicians blame each other, but no one is tackling the underlying issue. This issue was clearly explained on the news the other evening by the father of a teenage rioter.
He said that he was unable to discipline his son, "I cannot clip him round the ear, I cannot lock him in his room, I cannot control him within the confines of the law. The police cannot control him and it is all because of the European Court of Human Rights. What am I to do?"
Unless we appreciate where the real problem lies we will not successfully tackle it. Other European countries ignore many of these rules but we not only abide by them but gold plate them, then offer legal support to the miscreants.
If we don't come to our senses soon there will be a revolution led by the totally disillusioned moderate British population.

Yours Faithfully,
UK I P Councillor Michael Baker,
Sir,

We have for a long time heard how expensive the PFI contracts are and how we are pushing these costs onto future generations. This was discussed this morning on Radio 4. Commentators seemed confused on how we got into the situation and how we may get out. Politicians just fudge the issue.

The truth of the matter is that the PFI contract was dreamt up so that our Government could continue spending without enduring the wrath of Brussels.
Brussels imposes fiscal rules on government debt levels as a percentage of GDP, 3%. PFI allows government to continue spending without it falling on government debt, it is 'off balance sheet'. The problem is that it is considerably more expensive and burdens future generations. No one will, in public, say that this is yet another unwelcome by-product of membership of the European Union.

Church Farm, West Beckham.

Subject: Royal Mail reorganisation

Sir,

Localism - the current mantra of David Cameron. How does this sit with the proposed reorganisation of the Royal Mail?

Holt is seen as one of the growth towns in North Norfolk with 300 plus new homes and the commercial development/jobs centre for Sheringham up to the year 2021.
Yet Royal Mail suggests it may close the Holt sorting office and move its operations to Fakenham. The fall out from this is staggering, our postmen, who live in Holt, will drive to Fakenham to collect their vans and drive back to Holt to deliver the mail. At the end of the day they will drive back to Fakenham to collect their cars to drive back to Holt.

Carbon footprint - no worries, inefficient working practise to and from Holt each day 24 miles - no worries, winter snow roads closed no access - no worries, local business no post until mid/late morning - no worries.

Well I for one do worry. Postal services will suffer, business will suffer as will Royal Mail as we gradually move over to the more efficient private suppliers of the service.

Yours sincerely,

What is the Coalition trying to do to this country? I thought assisted suicide was illegal.
Whilst I accept the need to avoid pollution where possible to sign up to the first "ambitious" climate emissions cuts for the 2020's is commercial idiocy.
Add to that the fact that China is opening a new coal fired power station almost weekly and you can see that our efforts are simply ...ing into the wind, and being economically disastrous to boot.
Our Government should be pursuing a policy of economic regeneration, perhaps when we are in a healthy condition we can turn our attentions to pollution.

Sir,

The European Union has spoken. After a two year campaign the British Government has now admitted defeat at the hands of the European Human Rights Act.
In future against the wishes of the British people those who we throw into jail, murders, rapists, paedophiles, will have the right to exercise their vote.
It is a common held view in the United Kingdom that a convicted criminal leaves all but his basic human rights in the custody of the court whilst serving his sentence.
This is the clearest evidence so far that our Government is subservient to their masters in Brussels.

The UK Independence Party are pleased to announce that Michael Baker has been chosen to represent them as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the North Norfolk Constituency.

Michael Baker was born and brought up in North Norfolk attending Gresham's School in Holt before attending university in London where he achieved an Honours degree in Chemical Engineering before spending four years in industry with May and Baker, Norwich and Constructors John Brown in Portsmouth.
In 1973 he returned to Holt to take the reins of the family business, C.T.Baker Ltd. which includes the prestigious local department store Bakers and Larners of Holt. Over the next thirty five years he grew the company from a £175,000 - 17 staff operation into a £20m - 235 staff operation today.

He was elected onto the Holt Town Council in the mid '70's and the North Norfolk District Council in 1981 taking over the late Billy Elsdon's seat.
He joined UKIP in 2007 in protest at the leadership of the Conservative Party no longer representing the true values of its members and David Cameron's strong pro EU position. He featured two years running in the Eastern Daily Press (EDP) top 100 most influential business men in East Anglia. In 2009 he represented UKIP in the European Elections helping return MEP's and securing second place overall.
In the County Council elections he came second to the Conservatives greatly reducing their majority and forcing the LibDems into third place. Michael Baker's main philosophy is to return the government of the United Kingdom to Westminster, to withdraw from political union with Europe but to embrace them on a trading basis.

Common sense and personal responsibility are his two bywords.
